5 Gallon Water Filling Line Sourcing Checklist
Prepare the bottle-return, decapping, washing, filling, capping, sanitation, handling, output, and acceptance basis for an 18.9 liter water line.
A 5 gallon water filling line usually handles large returnable bottles around 18.9 liters. That changes the sourcing questions. Bottle age and condition, cap removal, external and internal washing, sanitation, manual handling, leak risk, finished-bottle weight, and return logistics can matter as much as the nominal filler speed.
1. Define the returnable bottle system
Send the exact bottle drawings and representative used bottles, not only a new sample. Record neck finish, handle, cap, bottle material, dimensions, weight, label or sleeve, expected bottle condition, and whether badly damaged or contaminated bottles are rejected before washing.
2. Map washing as a process
Ask suppliers to show the bottle path from receiving and decapping through external washing, internal prewash, detergent or disinfectant stages as applicable, intermediate rinses, final rinse, drainage, and transfer to filling. The buyer should define water quality, chemical responsibility, temperature, concentration monitoring, contact time, carryover control, and manual-cleaning points with qualified hygiene specialists.

3. Capacity needs a realistic bottle condition
Capacity may be quoted in bottles or barrels per hour. State whether the test uses clean new bottles or representative return bottles, how many operators are assumed, where output is measured, what packaging runs during the test, and how stops or rejected bottles are counted.
4. Confirm ergonomics and bottle handling
A filled 5 gallon bottle is heavy. Review conveyor height, accumulation, bottle transfer, loading and unloading, floor drainage, lifting, manual rotation, bagging, handle application, pallet loading, and operator access. The factory layout should separate dirty return bottles from clean filled product as required by the approved process.
5. Prepare samples and acceptance materials
- Representative new and used bottles, including worst acceptable condition.
- Caps, plugs, handles, labels, sleeves, bags, code samples, and pallet pattern.
- Water or approved test medium, washing chemicals, and buyer-approved sanitation procedure.
- Output, fill-volume, closure, leak, appearance, rinse, alarm, and changeover checks.
- Cleaning records, parts list, manuals, utility schedule, and operator training plan.
The line supplier should not decide the buyer’s hygiene or water-quality requirements alone. Final process, sanitation, worker safety, and market compliance require qualified local review.
